38. STEP-PARENT ABUSE
This can contain many of
the other types of abuse but it is placed in a
specific category because of this common factor - that one partner is
not the parent of the children who are the victims. Most common abuser
in this situation appears to be the male (step father) but this may be
the case because most mothers have custody of children rather than
fathers. The sad aspect of this form of abuse is that the parent, in
order that they do not upset their new partner, will believe the
partner in reference to the children if a child reports the abuse.
