TYPES OF ABUSE

38. STEP-PARENT ABUSE

This can contain many of the other types of abuse but it is placed in a specific category because of this common factor - that one partner is not the parent of the children who are the victims. Most common abuser in this situation appears to be the male (step father) but this may be the case because most mothers have custody of children rather than fathers. The sad aspect of this form of abuse is that the parent, in order that they do not upset their new partner, will believe the partner in reference to the children if a child reports the abuse.
